Position Overview:
As a Medical Assistant under the DOD SkillBridge program, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a civilian healthcare setting, applying and expanding upon your military medical training. This hands-on internship will provide exposure to various administrative and clinical responsibilities within a medical practice or facility, contributing to your successful transition into the civilian workforce.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Support:
- Assist healthcare providers during patient examinations and procedures.
- Prepare patients for examinations by taking vital signs (e.g., temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate) and documenting medical histories.
- Perform basic laboratory tests, such as blood draws or specimen collection, as appropriate and under supervision.
- Administer injections or medications as prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.
- Prepare and maintain examination rooms, ensuring they are clean and stocked with necessary supplies.
- Assist in patient education, including instructions on medication, lifestyle changes, and post-procedure care.
- Administrative Support:
- Manage patient records and ensure that documentation is complete, accurate, and filed according to the organization's policies.
- Schedule patient appointments, confirming insurance coverage, and assisting patients with the check-in process.
- Handle correspondence, billing, and insurance verification.
- Answer phone calls, direct inquiries, and provide necessary patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members to ensure optimal patient care.
- Provide excellent customer service by addressing patient concerns, facilitating communication, and promoting a positive patient experience.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities as part of the SkillBridge program to enhance your clinical and administrative skills.
Qualifications:
- Must be a transitioning service member eligible for the DOD SkillBridge program.
- Completed or in-progress medical training (e.g., Army Health Care Specialist, Navy Hospital Corpsman, or equivalent military medical experience).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with patients and healthcare professionals in a friendly and compassionate manner.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology, healthcare procedures, and infection control.
- Proficiency in using electronic medical records (EMR) and other healthcare management software is preferred.
- Ability to work well under pressure, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate discretion in dealing with sensitive information.
